By Car

Croatia has a very modern new motorway network. Tourists mostly come to Croatia by car, especially from the neighboring countries.

The main Istrian highway is the “Istrian Y” (Istarski ipsilon). Its eastern expressway (A8) connects Istria through Učka Tunnel via Rijeka with Dalmatia and Zagreb. At Kanfanara it joins the western expressway (A9) running through the hinterland towards Slovenian border in the north, or to Pula in the south. For exact exit, follow the signs on the highway.

Other highways and Učka Tunnel are charged at toll booths. It is possible to pay in Euros or with cards (American Express, Diners, MasterCard, Maestro, Visa).

Drivers should be prepared for usual traffic jams at toll booths in high season (July-August).

For technical assistance, dial HAK (Croatian Automobile Club) on 00385 1 987 247. For traffic and road conditions, dial 00385 1 464 0800.
